1 – 1:45 pm | Plant Monsters: Uprooting Systems Of Power | Shea Proulx (she/her) | Join botanical drawing instructor and comics whiz, Shea Proulx, for an investigation into power structures, pop culture and the place of the Plant. Are there roots of evil beneath the floral fun? Shea interrogates the efflorescent. |
2 – 2:45 pm | The Man Behind the Diner: Film-to-Comic Adaptation | Nick Johnson (he/him) | Film and comics share many storytelling techniques but they also have key differences. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each medium? What can we learn from adapting film directly into the comic format? Join Nick Johnson as he explores these questions with a case study of David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive. |
3 – 3:45 pm | 4Panel Comics | Potatohands Dolan (she/they) | Not every narrative needs a novel, sometimes you just need to say something short and sweet. Join Jillian ‘Potatohands’ Dolan and dive into the snappy and succint world of the four panel comic. We will be learning and practicing: the anatomy of the comic page the simplicity of a three act story structure Participants will be guided through the stages to create a four panel comic during the workshop. |
4 – 4:55 pm | What We Carry Through Time – Exploring Pass Me By with Kat Simmers and Ryan Danny Owen | Nick Johnson (he/him), Kat Simmers (she/her), Ryan Danny Owen (they/him/her) | Pass Me By is a queer coming-of-age graphic novel series that explores family, memory and resilience. With their latest release, Kat Simmers (she/her) and Ryan Danny Owen (they/him/her) delve deeper into the relationships of their main characters, their struggles and connections, and truly explore the storytelling potential of the comic medium, expertly creating lifelike characters and deep, emotional resonance in a way that only comics can. Moderated by Nick Johnson. |
5 – 5:45 pm | More Art, Less Pain | Michael Bischoff (they/them) | Art doesn’t have to mean suffering! Join our interactive panel and learn about some common ways that artists get injured, what you can do about it, and how to help prevent it. Michael Bischoff, Massage Therapist, has years of experience successfully treating clients with shoulder, elbow, and wrist pain, and is looking forward to helping you draw more with less suffering. |
