What was the first comic you read?
I can’t remember that. But the first comic that I just absolutely had to have? Rob Schrab’s Scud: The Disposable Assassin. My Aunt would buy it for me in Edmonton and ship it to small town Port Colborne, Ont. every month.
What inspired you to make comics? A specific story? Writer? Artist?
I would have to say that it is all my mother’s fault. She and I would go to the comic book shop, the Neutral Zone, in Niagara Fall Ont. every Sunday. This went on well into high school and continues to this day whenever we get together.
What do you like about comics? What is it about them that interests you? Inspires you? Moves you?
Comics to me are religion. They have shaped me into the man I am today. “What would Captain America do?” is a creed to how I live my life.
What is the most important thing people need to know about comics?
That yes, comics are literature.
What comic would you recommend to a first-time reader?
Saga Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples.
As a writer: pen or keyboard?
Pen to my notebook. Google Drive for everything else.
What’s the first thing you do when you sit down to work? Do you have a routine?
The first thing I do is close facebook. The second thing I do, is re-open facebook. Then I sip coffee and start typing.
Do you have a set work space? Where?
I have an office at home with a view of the mountains. But I keep everything online so I can work from any location. My best ideas come to me when I am nowhere near a pen though. Such is life.
Do you listen to music when you work? Other background noise?
I listen to musical scores and/or Bruce Springsteen. He’s an amazing storyteller and always inspiring.
Battling cliches and coming to terms with the ones that work.
If you had to pick one comic as a favourite, what would it be?
Watchmen. My dog eared copy has been with me for years.
What is the:
Most romantic comic you’ve ever read?
Sex Criminals Vol. 1. Matt Fraction just gets modern romance.
Most exciting comic you’ve ever read?
I read a lot so I’m just going to have to pick what I just finished so, Southern Cross by Becky Cloonan and Andy Belanger. I burned through Vol 1. in like 30 mins.
Anything by Grant Morrison.
Rat Queens by Kurtis J. Wiebe. Comedy in comics is hard but reading this, you wouldn’t know it.
Nameless by Grant Morrison. I just finished this. I have no idea what happened. But man.
No book has more feels per inch than Saga.
Who is your favourite comic character?
James “Bucky” Barnes aka the Winter Soldier. I am a sucker for redemption tales.
What is the natural talent you’d like to be gifted with and why?
I wish I could draw. I try, but no. Just… no.
What three words would you use to describe your work?
Fun, fancy, free
What is your favourite place to go in the city you live in?
