What was the first comic you read?

The Archie ‘TMNT’ series, Spectacular Spider-Man #195

What inspired you to make comics? A specific story? Writer? Artist?

I always wanted to make comics when I was young because I could draw. But when I grew up and discovered (then) WWF, the gym and girls, comics fell to the wayside. When I rediscovered them in college during my course in TV production, I had the skills to write a TV series, why couldn’t I write a comic?

With those Spectacular issues the team of J.M. DeMatteis and Sal Buscema had the biggest influence. Scenes that always stuck out in my mind were when a character goes through an emotional transition on a single page. The pacing showed a slow transformation from annoyance to horror or fear to anger. The fact these 2 could make this happen and showcase it so perfectly on a comic page put in me that I could produce anything on the page with enough skill and understanding.

What do you like about comics? What is it about them that interests you? Inspires you? Moves you?

TV and movies can make you feel emotions with an actor saying something or twitching his eyebrow a certain way. That medium can control pace. A comic has to be really smart to slow things down and create that emotion. When a creator does that successfully it works and works beautifully. But the reason a comic sticks out more is that I’m not connected to an actors face/name to be invested as I am to my favourite character going through the motions. It’s an actors job to get the character “right” or put their own spin. I cut the middle man and get to the source.

What is the most important thing people need to know about comics?

It’s fantasy. It’s sci-fi. There’s things here that can’t be done in real life. Treat it as such. Stop taking it too seriously and enjoy those 22 pages. An unlimited budget feature film that’s funded by what the imagination can bring and what the hand can put on paper.

What comic would you recommend to a first-time reader?

My go to books at the store (I work PT at Redd Skull Comics) are:

  • Y the Last Man
  • Batman Year One
  • Daredevil- Guardian Devil
  • Batman The Long Halloween
  • Spider-Man Anything by J. Michael Straczynski
  • Wolverine the Japan Saga
  • Batman the Court of Owls
  • Ex Machina
  • Wolverine Public Enemy
  • Daredevil The Man Without Fear
  • Southern Bastards
  • Wolverine Get Mystique

As an artist, what medium do work in? Pencils? Ink? Digital?

Anything that gets the job done or gets the job done on time. But I prefer to pencil traditionally and ink with markers or digitally.

As a writer, pen or keyboard?

Keyboard. I have chicken scratch.

What’s the first thing you do when you sit down to work? Do you have a routine?

Warm up sketches, squeeze a tennis ball, turn on some reruns of a TV show for background noise.

Do you have a set work space? Where?

Try to stick to my office but I like to join my girlfriend in the living room so as long as I can stay upright really anywhere.

Do you listen to music when you work? Other background noise?

Music if I’m in the mood. Mostly it’s animated series or movies in case I get inspiration for a shot from it.

Frustrations/challenges?

Being human like eating, drinking, get the heart pumping, going to the bathroom.
