What was the first comic you read?

A Justice League issue where the substitute heroes save Superman, Wonder Woman and Flash from The Maestro.

What inspired you to make comics? A specific story? Writer? Artist?

I’ve always loved reading comics and watching cartoons with fantastical creatures. I got serious about making them a couple of years ago.

What do you like about comics? What is it about them that interests you? Inspires you? Moves you?

The thing that excites me these days is the power to control an entire reading experience, and to tell stories that interest me in exactly the way I want to tell them.

What is the most important thing people need to know about comics?

They aren’t like any other medium and shouldn’t be compared to any other medium.

What comic would you recommend to a first-time reader?

Mine aren’t bad, I think, but you can’t go wrong with books like Bone or Smile or any of the classic Marvel stories.

As an artist, what medium do work in? Pencils? Ink? Digital?

Pencils and inks on board, then colours and letters in Photoshop/Illustrator.

As a writer, pen or keyboard?

I layout my pages on scrap paper and write dialogue on the final pages in Illustrator.

What’s the first thing you do when you sit down to work? Do you have a routine?

No routine. I work when my kids are asleep until I can’t stay awake myself.

Do you have a set work space? Where?

I have a dedicated office space in my house.

Do you listen to music when you work? Other background noise?

I like music when I’m drawing or lettering, but I only listen to podcasts when I colour. I don’t know why.

Frustrations/challenges?

The pay isn’t great, for the most part. I am with my girls during the day, so it can be hard to sacrifice my nights (traditionally a time to relax) to work.

If you had to pick one comic as a favourite, what would it be?

Probably either League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Volume 1 by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill, or Only a Poor Old Man by Carl Barks.

What is the:

Most romantic comic you’ve ever read?

I’ll let you know when I read it.

Most exciting comic you’ve ever read?

Domu.

Most Inspirational?

Carl Barks’ Scrooge/Donald Duck comics.

Funniest?

Scrooge McDuck, although Kyle Baker’s stuff is great.

Scariest?

Domu by Otomo. Junji Ito is horrifying, too.

Most moving?

WE3 is really great. All-Star Superman makes me tear up.

Who is your favourite comic character?

Favorite villain: Joker
Favorite hero: Scrooge McDuck

What is the natural talent you’d like to be gifted with and why?

I’ve always been partial to shape shifting. Flight is good, too.

What three words would you use to describe your work?

Cartoony, bouncy, fun

What is your favourite place to go in Edmonton?

I like the Garneau Theatre, Happy Harbor Comics, and the Highlevel Diner

Future projects you are working on/would like to work on:

I want to do a funny animal book, a fantasy book, and a zombie cowboy book.

Unlikely inspiration?

Nintendo games, especially Mega Man 2.
