Daily sketch work can be found on my twitter, and I am currently working on an unnamed short comic that I hope to complete this decade.
I can always be found on the Twitter @jdizzlelizzle
What was the first comic you read?
One fateful week my local library stocked a random selection of awesome – Gaiman’s Sandman, Otomo’s Domu & Dark Horse’s Ghost.
What inspired you to make comics? A specific story? Writer? Author?
The people who said ‘Yes’ and also the people who noted that they couldn’t legally stop me. Many of those people were lovely local supportive creators, too kind to be named and shamed. I also had the pleasure of meeting Walden Wong, whose amazing enthusiasm made ink so much more approachable.
What do you like about comics? What is it about them that interests you? Inspires you? Moves you?
Opening a comic is plugging in to the shared imagination of its cumulative creators- and all their inspirations and mentors. There’s a strength in the combination of word and art
What is the most important thing people need to know about comics?
It’s anyone’s medium. Nobody can stop you from putting words and pictures together and creating something that has meaning to you.
What’s the first thing you do when you sit down to work? Do you have a routine?
I draw six days a week – after the day job I pull out the sketch pad and crack out the daily offering. Once that is completed I psych myself up and spend a while drawing body shapes. If that still hasn’t crushed my artistic dreams I thumbnail. If thumbnailing hasn’t irreparably damaged my ego I may gingerly sketch in the big girl comic pad. I then immediately take a cold shower and question my place in the universe.
Do you have a set work space? Where?
I find desks impossible – I work on couch armrests and propped up in bed. These are terrible habits and shouldn’t be replicated. My bedsheets look like an octopus family were sacrificed to some dark ink-drinking god.
Do you listen to music when you work? Other background noise?
Spotify & Netflix run continuously. We live in the future and I take full advantage of the 24hr personal soundtrack options.
I’m often vexed that my brain can make pictures that my hands can’t translate. The best part of that is it is fixable with time and practice. The worst part is finding time to practice.
If you had to pick one comic as a favourite, what would it be?
This question is sadistic
What is the:
Most romantic comic you’ve ever read?
Full disclaimer I am awful at these questions and will have different answers in five minutes. But I definitely appreciate the relationships in Saga, real romance, real love in real life is hard as balls
Most exciting comic you’ve ever read?
I am a sucker for 2000AD, it’s always a guaranteed shot of adrenaline and electro brainrays that I am dependent upon
Low -mostly because I don’t work in colour and Low’s blurry palette intimidates and dazzles me.
Angela: Queen of Hel. The snark could wipe out a kindergarten class
Junji Ito’s body of work terrifies me – who put him here on this planet and with what foul intentions?
The last comic to leave me absolutely sobbing was Kennel Block Blues. Do you like animals? Do you have empathy for those failed by society and a broken prison system? Here – have a knife to the heart
Who is your favourite comic character?
Noa – Skydoll.. Her effortless innocence and sexuality is served beautifully by both her kind heart and Barbucci’s gift for curves.
What is the natural talent you’d like to be gifted with and why.
There is no limit to the reprehensible things I would do for hands that weren’t potatoes
What is your favourite place to go in Calgary?
Tom Campbell hill
Future projects you are working on/would like to work on
Horror. Unabashed skin crawling horror.
You are stranded on a desert island, you must have:
Which 3 comics? Complete Sandman, Fables & 100 Bullets.
Which 3 albums? Jason isbell- southeastern. Tom waits – blue Valentine. Danzig – lucifuge
Which 3 movies? Populaire, ponyo, event horizon
