What was the first comic you read?
the first comic I remember reading was always Archie
What inspired you to make comics? A specific story? Writer? Author?
I would say the Batman: Arkham Asylum video game inspired me. It got me to pick up a copy of ‘Batman: Hush’, which remains one of my favourite books to this day. One other is the graphic novel version of ’The Hobbit’. Amazing art, and inspired me to make comics with a medium that isn’t digital, by simply showing me that comics could be beautiful in more forms than one! Also various movies, as whenever I watch a movie I try and think about what it might look like if it were a comic. It is a helpful way to help me visualize what I need to show to make an understandable book (something I still have lots to learn about haha)
the art of comics is probably my favourite aspect. Super neat to see how different artists envision characters and stories. And being a history student, I really enjoy the ability that comics have to give a glimpse into the context from which they were created. This past semester, I wrote a 60 page paper looking at various superhero comics and seeing how they convey historical themes, and how they can serve as historical sources.
What comic would you recommend to a first time reader?
I would suggest ‘Batman: Knightfall’, and Scott Snyder’s ‘The Wake’. Also, not a comic book, but rather one of many good books on the study of comics as history: Bradford Wright’s ‘Comic Book Nation.’ A very good read for showing how comics have changed and fit into history.
What medium do you work in?
I work in pencils, and then I do my own inking. On my first (and currently only) comic I also used prismacolor art markers to do grey scales. I am hoping to do watercolors or ink wash on my next story.
Do you listen to music while you work?
I really enjoy listening to music while I work, sometimes a podcast. Owl City has always been a favourite of mine, but Spotify makes it easy to get a lot of variety!
What is your favourite comic?
my favourite comic/graphic novel right now would probably be Snyder’s ‘The Wake’. I really think the first half of that book is comics perfection. It is beautifully written, and the art perfectly matches the feel. Archie will always have a special place in my heart though.
Who is your favourite comic character?
Batman, with a lot tied for second!
What 3 words would you use to describe your work?
gritty, textured, and emotional (and hopefully always improving!)
What is your favourite place to go in Calgary?
my favourite place to go in Calgary would probably be… well actually, outside of it. Drumheller has always been a place I love. The scenery is so unique and beautiful.
Future projects you are working on/would like to work on?
I am currently working on issue #2 of my self-published comic, ‘Atticus Drake’, a WWII story. This coming year, my goal is to get my next story, a space-thriller, completed.
unlikely inspiration would probably be Owl City. The dream-like quality of so much of his music is something I really want to put into my work.
