Name: Amanda Thompson
Type of Creator: Comic Artist, Illustrator
List your work:
What was the first comic you read?
Oh, haha I dunno! I’ve always enjoyed comics, mostly coming across them online as I grew up! Girls With Slingshots was probably one of the first webcomics I actively followed
What inspired you to make comics? A specific story? Writer? Author?
I love the animation of Disney’s 90’s movies, but what I really remember was first discovering Concept Art and it’s place in the creation process of my favourite games! Oddworld concept art still blows me away every time I look at it. All the games and animated movies I love have really great art behind them, and I enjoy taking the time to check out all the behind-the-scenes work that went into them. Storyboards of recent animated television series, like Adventure Time, Steven Universe, or Wander Over Yonder, and various enticing webcomics online really kick-started my dream of being a Comic Artist.
What do you like about comics? What is it about them that interests you? Inspires you? Moves you?
I love the art, and the way it plays into story-telling. There can be panels with heavy dialogue and simple art on one page, and then the next is an entire detailed illustration with no dialogue at all, but it speaks just as much in a different way. It’s always enjoyable to find little tidbits the artists may hide in the background as well!
What’s the most important thing people need to know about comics?
That they’re not just for kids! Everybody can appreciate comics, and can be just as much an art and a statement as Jackson Pollock’s paint splatters hung in a white-walled gallery.
What comic would you recommend to a first time reader?
Check out https://www.thehiveworks.com/, they have a great catalogue of comics! Otherwise, I’d recommend Sleepless Domain, Sufficiently Remarkable, and Camp Weedonwantcha. There’s literally a whole world of comics out there, so just explore and see what kinds of stuff you like!
What medium do you work in?
I work digitally with Paint Tool SAI
Do you have a set work space?
I have my computer set up as my station in the basement, where I can hide from the sunlight and outside world.
Do you listen to music while you work?
I enjoy electronica music to jam to in the background. I have a playlist on my YouTube of electronica music I will put on, or I’ll find a random, cool song and let the YouTube autoplay take over. On more lax days, I’ll put on some Game Grumps to watch while I draw.
Most romantic comic you’ve ever read?
That’s a hard pick! Pretty much every comic, even the short and quick 2 panel ones that pop up on my Tumblr feed inspire me to make comics!
This one is a classic to me – http://imgur.com/gallery/
The Fiona and Cake Adventure Time comic on my shelf. The Ice Queen had an…interesting end in that story arc.
Who is your favourite comic character?
At the moment I really dig Undine from Sleepless Domain.
What natural talent do you wish you had?
Teleportation, so I can always be on time =3
What three words would you use to describe your work?
Cartoon, Upbeat, Quiet
What is your favourite place to go in Lethbridge?
My friends’ place for LAN parties!
Future projects you are working on/would like to work on?
I’m currently publishing pages for Mysty Waters! Having my own webcomic is a milestone for me, and I hope to collaborate with others and make more comics in the future!
