To our Panel One Community,
The Panel One Comics Society Board of Directors has made the difficult decision of canceling the 2020 Panel One Comic Creator Festival in a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Panel One has been closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation in Alberta and its potential impact on our festival – which has led to our decision to cancel the show. The safety of our creators and artists is of paramount importance to us.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding of this evolving global situation.
Board of Directors,
Panel One Comics Society
COVID-19 is a quickly evolving health challenge. Panel One Comics Society is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our members, the public we interact with and the dedicated volunteers who run the organization.
On March 12, 2020, the Government of Alberta’s released the following statement:
“…our public health response must rise to the challenge we face. That is why, effective immediately, the Emergency Management Cabinet Committee has approved my recommendation that all large gatherings of more than 250 people, or international events in the province are to be cancelled.
This includes large sporting events, conferences and community events. It does not extend to places of worship, grocery stores, airports or shopping centres.
Any event that has less than 250 attendees and expects to have international participants, or involves critical infrastructure staff, seniors, or other high-risk populations should also be cancelled.”
In compliance with the Government of Alberta statement, Panel One will be investigating the impact this will have on upcoming events.
We will be reviewing our involvement in attending and hosting events on a case-by-case basis. The Board of Directors is under the advisement of current and future notices from Alberta Health, City of Calgary and Government.
This will mean that upcoming events such as our Sketch Sessions series (currently scheduled for March 28, 2020) has been cancelled and our attendance at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo is currently under review.
The Board of Directors has currently not made a decision regarding the rescheduling of the Panel One Comic Creator Festival (May 30, 2020). We will be examining risks and other factors and will provide as much advance notice as possible on what actions are required for the festival.
Panel One Comics Society will be providing updates at panelone.ca/covid-19.
